Best Student Designer – Jacqui Luker, University of Derby Sponsored by Ian Stuart Bride
This annual awards programme, organised by Bridal Buyer magazine, is a highlight of the industry calendar. The awards ceremony is attended by the key names in the bridal business – the event also provides the Student Designer category finalist with an opportunity to showcase their talents to industry experts and potential employers. Past winners have gone on to make their careers in bridal: Katie Nolan is employed by Ellis Bridals; Gemma Steele is Ian Stuart’s design PA; 2011 winner Kate Harrod is now the in-house designer for The White Room in Sheffield; and 2012 winner Geraint Jones has been gathering working experience with Ian Stuart’s team.
Ian Stuart masterminds this important award scheme and, as the sponsor, he develops the brief and is the key judge. He himself is a multi-award-winning designer and is hugely respected for championing and nurturing new names in the industry. We are looking for the names that could shape the future of the bridal industry and we want your students to have the opportunity of being recognised.
Artistic interpretations: Design and create a wedding gown inspired by a famous artist, dead or alive. The design must incorporate the ‘handwriting’ of this artist. Students are expected to study their chosen artist’s works, and their most-heralded pieces, and should also consider elements such as the era and country of the artist. Their findings and inspiration should be developed into a design that is inspired, original and workable. Importantly, entrants must be confident that their design can be translated from paper to finished sample as this will be a requirement of the award finalists.
